SUMMARY:Archery Deer Hunt
DESCRIPTION:2022 Archery Deer Hunt\n\n\nThe 2022 GEO Archery Deer Hunt occurred across several properties that are spread throughout Alamance\, Person\, and Orange counties in central North Carolina.  Due to funding issues our event participants were heavily reduced to allow funds to be reallocated for the October rifle camp.  Josh Tabor was flown in from Rutland\, Vermont to try his luck at an early season whitetail buck.  Josh hunted exclusively with Drew Blake over 3 days and shared time bonding with Drew and his family.  Meals were prepared by Drew’s wife\, Sarah\, and consisted of venison pasta\, breakfast quesadillas\, and fried catfish with traditional southern sides.  This was Josh’s first experience with catfish which he seemed to enjoy.  Josh and Drew hunted in areas known to produce monster North Carolina whitetail bucks with trail camera photos leading up to the event proving just that.  The pair hunted out of preset Barronett Featherfive ground blinds in landscapes varying from hardwood ridges over looking large creek bottoms\, fallow fields\, and cutovers.  Drew picked Josh up from Raleigh-Durham International Airport at 11:30pm Thursday September 22nd.  The pair arrived back at camp around 1:00am and settled in for the next morning.  Hunting was hot and slow the entire weekend with no deer harvested. Although\, no deer were harvested\, Josh and Drew spent time learning more about each other and deer hunting in the south.  We appreciate Josh for his understanding that our hunts are not guaranteed.  At the end of the day\, our trips are about a lot more then harvesting the animal we’re pursuing.  Our hunts are about getting people outdoors that may not have the resources todo so on their own.  If you like this story and want to learn more about Josh please let us know.  He is looking for a mentor to take him hunting in Vermont.  If you know of anyone in the Rutland area please reach out to us so that we can connect them. \n\nSpecial thanks to the following companies and organizations for supporting this event:\n\n\n\n\n\nHUNTSTAND\nELIMISHIELD HUNT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPUR-PRO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNC WILDLIFE RESOURCES COMISSION\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHITETAIL GREENS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHALE HABITAT & SEED\n\n\n\n\n\nHere are a few trail camera shots of deer that never showed:\n  \nHere are a few photos from our camp and hunts:\n       \n

SUMMARY:Trophy Bull Drum Fishing Trip
DESCRIPTION:This event featured GEO’s Adaptive Recreation Coordinator\, Chad Hooks\, GEO’s Fundraising Director\, Michael Fussell\, and GEO’s President\, Drew Blake\, targeting Spanish mackerel off the beach of Emerald Isle\, North Carolina. The original idea for this trip was to target trophy drum with Captain Austin Goodwin in the Cedar Island area\, but the weather had other plans Friday night. \nSaturday morning the group launched their boat from Osprey Oaks Marina on Highway 24 in Newport. They started the morning with a 12 mile run to the mouth of Bogue Inlet. Those of you that know Bogue Inlet know that it can be a bit sporty when the wind and tide are bucking each other. And this morning it was. Our crew went out the inlet and settled the boat down around the bell buoy to get a read on the seas. Once everyone was settled in\, they made their way to a hardbottom just over a mile offshore. They dropped four lines in the water pulling cigar minnows on homemade skirt rigs. It wasn’t long and a bait ball popped up on the surface in front of the boat. Mike grabbed a spinning rod rigged with a diamond jig and start chunking it into the bait pod. A few casts later and the first Spanish of the day was in the boat. After that they pulled all the trolling lines in and switched over to chasing bait pods. They found a tide line just outside the inlet and worked the backside of it catching 40-50 Spanish and keeping 8-10. \nMike was perfect casting into the schools and handing the rod off to Chad for him to get in the action. It was a perfect example of how our program should work with a veteran/first responder working his tail off to put a blind/visually impaired person on fish. Later in the day Chad even grabbed a rod and starting casting into the pods. The crew ended the day briefly fishing for inshore species behind Bear Island where Drew caught a 16” flounder. To bad flounder season wasn’t in. They finished the day off with a quick boat ride up the Intercoastal Waterway and were off the water in time to clean their catch and make a great dinner.  Dinner consisted of grilling the Spanish on the charcoal grill in tinfoil topped with butter and wrapped in bacon until they were golden brown served with a side of Cajun fries.

SUMMARY:Kerr Lake Striper/Catfish
DESCRIPTION:June 3rd- 4th\, 2022\n  \nThis event consisted of Drew Blake taking Chad Hooks and Billy Judson on an overnight striper fishing trip.  The trip started with the crew launching the 21′ Sea Hunt BX21 from Ivy Hill Boat Ramp and finding a place to camp along the shore of Mill Creek.  Once camp was setup the crew set out to try some nighttime catfish jugging but was unsuccessful.  The crew jugged until 12 or 1:00 in the morning then decided to call it a night; however\, morning came in only 3 short hours as they were up catching shad around 4:00am.  To catch bait the crew drifted the boat just offshore in around 30 foot of water and deployed spotlights over the side of the boat.  Within a hour bait fish could easily be seen swimming alongside the boat and with a few quick throws of his 8 foot cast net\, Drew had enough 3 to 5 inch shad to fish with for the day.  The crew headed up the lake to the first spot and continued jumping around the lake for a better part of the day without success on the striped bass.  A few hours in\, Drew made the decision to switch over to catfish and it paid off with them boating one 14 pound bluecat and 2 other 3-5 pounders. \n \n  \nPhotographs of the trip\n Kerr Lake Sunrise Drew throwing his cast net to catch bait Chad battling a fish Chad holding his largest fish to date. SUMMARY:2022 Turkey Camp
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\nThe 2022 GEO Turkey Camp was hosted by the prestigious Flat Branch Hunt Club in Bunnlevel\, North Carolina. Guests were provided a guide and cameraman for the event along with lodging and daily meals. We would like to thank Byrd’s BBQ and Noble Meats & Eatery for the awesome meals. Guests experienced the finest of North Carolina turkey hunting in landscapes varying from managed food plots\, agricultural fields\, and planted pine to hardwood creek bottoms. Hunting occurred from temporary ground blinds that were perfectly placed based on hours of scouting and years of hunting knowledge. While the birds did not cooperate this years we were able to get a couple of groups within close proximity of mature gobbling toms. But as fate would have it we were unable to seal the deal. Even though no turkeys were harvested all participants enjoyed much needed relaxation and have formed long lasting bonds. Given the success of our first event\, we at GEO are proud and excited for what the future holds. Special thanks to the event sponsors that are listed below. \nSpecial thanks to the following companies and organizations for supporting this event:\n\n\n\n\n\nHUNTSTAND\nELIMISHIELD HUNT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRIANGLE DISABILITY AWARENESS COUNCIL\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDAVIE FARM SERVICE/SOUTHERN STATES\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFATHER N SON CALLS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBYRDS’S BBQ\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOBLE MEATS & EATERY\n\n\nEvent Photographs\n\n Elimishield scent eliminator product given to all attendees Hunter Chad Hooks with an Accurfire Noctis V1 and a Remington 11-87 waiting on a turkey.
