Hunters utilize marsh and stake blinds from Cedar Island to Ocracoke to target redheads\, often alongside bluebills\, bufflehead\, and pintails\, numerous guides call this water home; however\, all the water is for public use.  Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge and the area surrounding it offer a unique waterfowl hunting opportunity.  The area is know as “Down East” and has its own style of life. \nDown East refers to the rural waterfront towns east of Beaufort\, beginning at the North River Bridge. These towns include Bettie\, Otway\, Straits\, Harkers Island\, Gloucester\, Marshallberg\, Smyrna\, Williston\, Davis\, Stacy\, Masontown\, Sea Level\, Atlantic\, and Cedar Island. The name\, Down East\, originates from a nautical term\, referring to sailing downwind and east from Beaufort to navigate around Cape Lookout. The area is famous for its unique “Hoi Toider” (High Tider) accent\, a remnant of Elizabethan English.  Known for its rich maritime heritage\, including boat building and decoy carving\, the area offers a slow-paced lifestyle\, expansive salt marshes\, and access to Cape Lookout National Seashore. The area offers many activities and attractions from historic towns and fishing villages to wooden ship building and the modern yacht and offshore sport fishing boat companies. \nThe Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center and the Cape Lookout National Seashore Headquarters both call Down East home\, along with the Cedar Island Ferry terminal\, which is known as the gateway to Ocracoke Island. \n \n  \n  \n  URL:https://guidingeyesoutdoors.org/event/1505/ END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20251208T070000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20251208T223000 DTSTAMP:20260506T044248 CREATED:20251213T141658Z LAST-MODIFIED:20251213T141658Z UID:1485-1765177200-1765233000@guidingeyesoutdoors.org SUMMARY:Swan Hunt 2025 DESCRIPTION:December 8\, 2025\nPantego\, NC\nHosted By:\n \nDrew Blake\, Brendon Brown\, and Cam Patrick finally completed a swan hunt that was 2 years in the making.  The trip started off with a five (5) hour drive to a cabin owned by Brendon’s family in Fairfield\, NC.  After a long dinner at Harris’ Steak & Seafood House\, located at 6555 NC-94\, Fairfield\, NC 27826\, the guys left and settled back in for a good nights sleep at the cabin.  The next morning came early for a hour ride to the hunt field.  Along the way the guys stopped to fill their bellies at MJ’s Country Store & Grill\, located at 6888 NC-99\, Pantego\, NC 27860.  All the guys enjoyed smoked sausage\, egg\, and cheese biscuits and friendly conversations with the store staff.  After breakfast the guys made their way to the field to meet Jason Haddock with H & H Guide Service.  After a short trailer ride to the blind the guys were able to watch Jason put out swan decoys in preparation for the hunt.  A blind had been built and used throughout the season by Jason to harvest numerous swans.  The blind was constructed out of hog slats placed in a drainage ditch and surround by wire hog panels strapped to metal T-posts and covered with pine limbs.  Cam and Drew assisted Brendon into the blind and it wasn’t long before the action began.  Brendon quickly had multiple swans within shooting range and attempted three unassisted shots hitting one swan two out of three times but the swan continued to fly away.  Perfect shots are needed to harvest a swan.  Brendon attempted these shots all by hearing the swans in flight.  Drew slid behind Brendon to assist if needed for the next group that came in.  The next group came in less then 5 minutes after the first shots and a single swan flew straight into the Brendon.  Drew told him to shoulder the gun\, Brendon locked on by hearing the whistle of the wind through the birds wings and Drew told him when to pull the trigger.  Success.  In three shots Brendon had accomplished something that no other blind person has in the entire world.  This is based on our research.  Cam and Drew took their shots at right many swans throughout the day all while Brendon joked about how he shot his in three shots.  The day ended with all three harvesting beautiful swans. Striped bass were targeted with live bait and deep water trolling techniques depending on conditions at the time. Live baiting will consisted of 6-8 rods rigged with modified Carolina Rigs topped off with herring fishing in depths from 10-40 feet deep. Live baiting utilized planer boards from AlphaBoardz. Deep Water Trolling consisted of 4 rods fished off of Cannon downriggers and 2 leadcore rods fishing at depths from 25-60 feet deep. While trolling a variety of lure combinations were used with the most common one being Alabama rigs topped with bucktails and Striper Sniper Snake worms. Catfish were targeted using Santee Cooper Rigs\, Carolina Rigs\, float rigs and/or noodles ranging from shallow points and coves (10-15 feet deep) to deep water channel ledges (30-40 feet deep) depending on conditions. Our best time of fishing was late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. It is located approximately 69 miles northwest of Charlotte\, 84 miles southwest of Winston-Salem\, and 90 miles northeast of Asheville and boasts breathtaking views from elevation ranges from 900 feet to 5\,964 feet. \nA total of thirty-two (32) people (Staff\, Volunteers\, and Participants) signed up to attend this event which was the largest number to sign up for any event to this point.  Ultimately sixteen (16) people wound up attending with five (5) of them being selected to hunt at the event.  The remain positions were filled by staff and our largest outpouring of volunteers that we have ever seen.  MAG Outdoors not only pulled out all the stops but they pulled out a community of people.  We cannot thank them enough for the support they have shown our organization in just the few short months that we have known each other. \nLodging was provided for guests and volunteers in tents that  were provided by GEO and consisted of a 10-ft x 12-ft canvas wall tent from The Wall Tent Shop  and a 10-ft x 12-ft Kodiak Canvas tent.  Guests for the event were provided a volunteer guide and experienced the finest of North Carolina whitetail deer hunting in temporary ground blinds carefully positioned over looking the finest feeder on the market\, the 150 pound MAG feeder. \nFriday Night Dinner\nFriday night (October 18th) started with a large camp fire meet and greet featuring spaghetti prepared by Paul Rhoades of Sizzlin Arrow. Camp Don Lee was the perfect venue for our unique and diverse group of participants and volunteers. Our staff overcame the occasional boat issues and adapted to deliver an awesome event. At one point\, we were down to one operational boat\, but the participants rotated through in groups and piled on the boat for a great time. While we unfortunately did not reel in any Trophy Drum\, multiple participants felt the rod bow forward and heard the drag scream as line was pulled out of the reel and likely taken by an elusive Trophy Drum.  We were however successful and concluded the event with a big blue and five (5) rays being caught. While not fishing\, participants enjoyed activities such as kayaking\, swimming\, log rolling (or attempting to) and relaxing around the beautiful campus of Camp Don Lee. Therefore\, both NC and VA have removed the size limit restriction during the summer months (June – September) and ask that anglers halt striper fishing when they catch their legal limit of four striped bass per day rather than continue to catch fish and cull smaller fish. \nBuggs Island is also home to the World Record Blue Catfish weighing in at a whopping 143 pounds.  Catfish can be caught throughout the lake by focusing on points next to deep channels. \nStriped bass will be targeted with Drew on a  Sea Hunt BX21 bay boat using live bait and/or deep water trolling depending on conditions at the time.  Live baiting will consist of 6-8 rods rigged with modified Carolina Rigs topped off with herring or bream fishing in depths from 10-40 feet deep.  Deep Water Trolling will consist of 4 rods fished off of Cannon downriggers and two leadcore rods fishing at depths from 25-60 feet deep. Brian and Monaca quickly joined in and helped setup the Disc-o-Bed Cot Bunk beds while Drew and Cam cooked dinner and setup things for the next day.  As the sunset\, Cam and Drew launched the Sea Hunt BX21 Bay Boat from the boat ramp and tied it up along the shore of the campsite.  Drew then loaded the boat down for the next morning with ten (10) fishing rods\, 6 for trolling for stripers and 4 for catfishing\, along with fifteen (15) catfish noodles\, cannon downriggers\, and two (2) Icey-Tek coolers full of ice\, drinks and snacks.  The rest of the night consisted of Drew and Cam preparing trolling rigs and strategizing the plan for the next day while Monaca and Brian enjoyed some long awaited friend time by the campfire. \nSaturday morning came early as the crew departed camp not long after sunrise and soon began targeting stripers.  Drew and Cam threw every trick in the book at the fish in an attempt to make a striper bite the hook.  Drew made the decision to switch up species after 5 hours of no action covering miles and miles of the lake.  Cam began baiting noodles while Drew navigated the boat to a cove that consistently produces high numbers of catfish.  Drew utilized the Lowrance Elite 12Ti to locate the perfect underwater ledges and channels and told Cam to toss the noodles.  The first fish bit before all the noodles were set and from then on it was immediate and constant action for 30-45 minutes.  The crew boated five (5) catfish that were the perfect eating size.  The crew decided to call it a day after nearly 9 hours on the boat.  Back at camp\, Cam cooked steaks over an open fire while Drew deep fried hushpuppies along with the freshly caught catfish.  Everyone enjoyed the meal with Brian eating his first fried catfish. \nSunday morning the crew had a short time to fish before Brian had to make his flight out of RDU back to Chicago.  They set out early and decided to skip the stripers and target catfish.  The morning started off interesting with a huge snapping turtle taking the bait.  Catching turtles is bad luck when fishing so Drew made the decision to change location.  The noodles were redeployed and it wasn’t long Brian boated a 4 pound large mouth off a noodle.  After that the crew headed back to camp to start the dreaded task of packing up.  As the trip concluded the crew realized that a special bond was formed over the weekend and Form\n\n\nThe 2024 Duck Camp will be based of Swansboro\, NC from January 12th-20th\, 2024.  Hunters will experience a wide range of coastal NC hunting from the quietness of the White Oak River to the shallowest of sounds (Bogue & Core Sounds) to the broadest of rivers (Neuse and Tar-Pam Rivers).  Each days weather and the movement of birds will determine the optimal hunt location each day.  With a combined 30+ years of duck hunting experience guides Michael Fussell and Drew Blake\, our hunters are in for a good time on the water.  Hunts will be out of Michael's Lund 1860 side console boat equipped with a custom duck blind and the much needed camp stove for warm meals.  Hunting out of boat will give our hunt groups the mobility needed to chase birds from the coastal marsh grass to the open water.  Early mornings are a sure thing as we may leave the confines of Carteret County and make the 2 hour ride to the Hyde County area.  Bring your cold weather gear\, ski googles\, and After calling everywhere possible\, Michael decided to load up his brothers kayak and attempt to make the best of the situation. \nDay 2 of the trip consisted of Daniel and Drew doing some unsuccessful scouting and resting prior to the arrival of Michael with fresh intel. After an uneventful afternoon hunt of watching birds land on the other side of the bay Drew and Michael decided to shift things up.
